Snack #176- Turbos Flamas Flavored Corn Snacks

Turbos Flamas Flavored Corn Snacks

These oversized Fritos are like an extra flavor-blasted version of the Doritos Flamas.  They are extremely lime flavored and very spicy with a lasting burn.  They clearly use the same flavoring on these but because the Turbos are twisty they catch way more seasoning as you can see by their bright red color.  The texture of Turbos is dense and not as crunchy as Fritos or Doritos which makes them less yummy but they sure are super spicy and lime flavored.

Rating on the Spice-O-Meter: 7.5/10
Bottom Line: Lime and spice explosion.

Snack #159- Fritos Tapatío Flavored Corn Snacks

Fritos Tapatío Flavored Corn Snacks

This is the second free snack sample sent to us by the nice people at Frito-Lay.  These Fritos are a super curly variety with a basic hot sauce flavoring.  They are light flaky corn chips but denser than the standard Frito because of the extra curliness.  The flavor on these isn’t as complex as the Ruffles and doesn’t quite taste like hot sauce but more like straight pepper heat.  They really taste mostly like a normal Frito until you swallow and then it feels like you just swallowed a pile of dried pepper seeds and has the same face-warming burn as the other Tapatío snacks.  It does allow you to really taste the corn flavor of the Fritos which is nice but the heat is dry and not as pleasant as it could be.

Rating on the Spice-O-Meter: 6/10
Bottom Line: Standard Fritos with a burny finish.

Snack #137- Takis Fuego Hot Chili Pepper & Lime Flavored Corn Snack

Takis Fuego Hot Chili Pepper & Lime Flavored Corn Snack

This label says ‘corn snack’ but these look more like rolled up tortilla chips coated in red powder. And strangely enough, that’s exactly what they taste like. The mysterious red powder is indefinable but also quite spicy. The heat mostly hits the back of the throat where it burns down the throat. There is also a lot of lime flavor in these and I was surprised because usually lime flavor is really acidic but the flavoring in these is milder. In fact the overall taste of these is better than I expected and not as disgusting as many chili lime flavored snacks.

Rating on the Spice-O-Meter: 5/10

Bottom Line: Chili lime tortilla chips.

Snack #123- Barcel Churritos Chile and Lime Flavored Corn Snacks

Barcel Churritos Chile and Lime Flavored Corn Snacks
So these snacks came from Texas, where they were imported from a manufacturer in Mexico. That being said, it is pretty disappointing that these aren't spicier. The lime flavor comes through but is somewhat overwhelming and the chile flavor is not exciting enough. The texture of these is a little disappointing as well; the corn is heavy and not crunchy. If they are claiming these snacks are more spicy now than before, I'm glad I didn't rate them before!

Rating on the Spice-O-Meter: 1/10
Bottom Line: Limey corn.

Snack #114- Burger King Hot & Spicy Onion Rings Flavored Snacks

Burger King Hot & Spicy Onion Rings Flavored Snacks

I have been DREADING these for months. It actually took me 3 months to work up the nerve to buy them from the store and now I am taking the plunge and tasting them. They certainly are shaped like onion rings though the main ingredient is corn meal and the color is the most unnatural reddish-orange fake spice color I’ve ever seen. They are basically a ring shaped cheez doodle. And the flavor…wow. The first thing that hits your mouth is the corn meal/rice flour Styrofoam flavor but that is quickly followed by an overpowering ‘spicy’ flavor that is cough-inducing. It takes like fake cheese and death attacking my mouth and I almost can’t believe a cheese puff could have this much flavor. They are fluffy but the corn and rice combination gets stuck in the teeth and throat which isn’t too pleasant. It’s hard to make a firm decision about these- on the one hand, they are certainly flavorful and spicy, but the flavor is pretty overwhelming. Oh yeah, and they barely resemble onion rings aside from the shape and an extremely subtle onion flavor leftover once all the red powder has melted off the ring.

Rating on the Spice-O-Meter: 7/10

Bottom Line: Overwhelmingly powerful flavor.

Snack #110- Bugles Hot Buffalo Corn Snacks

Bugles Hot Buffalo Corn Snacks
So generally I enjoy Bugles. They are nice and light and crispy and have a fun shape. These Bugles have those same characteristics but with the addition of spice. The flavor is called Hot Buffalo but honestly they just taste soaked in hot sauce and not really distinctly buffalo flavored. The initial flavor is pretty sweet but the heat comes through strongly after a second. The spice mostly hides the buttery corn taste of Bugles, which is my favorite thing about Bugles, but in general they still retain the fun crisp. The flavor is definitely spicy from the first snack and burns the tongue and the throat. I wish the flavor was a little more like a buffalo wing and less straight hot sauce but these aren’t disappointing. In fact I have continued to eat them while writing this review and I am really enjoying them.

Rating on the Spice-O-Meter: 5/10
Bottom Line: Spicy Bugles.
